Council advises that it will be modifying its opening times for the Mingenew Waste Transfer Station effective Monday 23 September 2024.
The Council recently tendered for its waste services which has resulted in AVON Waste being successfully appointed as our new waste contractor.
The costs for delivery of waste services have risen significantly since the Council last entered its waste contract some 5 years ago. The Waste fees charged to residents no longer cover the cost of kerb side collection and the transfer station leaving a shortfall of ~ $58,000 per year.
Some may say our rates have gone up – use this money! Unfortunately, the general 5% rate increase has been consumed by increases in workers compensation insurance, State Government Audit Fees and a reduction in the Federal Government FAG Grant. The other 5% rate increase is being used to improve our roads.
Rather than increase its fees, the Council would first like to try and see if the operation of the transfer station can be modified and still provide its essential service.
The community has already changed the way it manages its waste and has demonstrated this through the use of the new transfer station.
A survey was released to the community which demonstrated that Saturday and Wednesday were the preferred days for opening of the transfer station. This will result in a reduction to the opening hours from 18 hours per week to 12 hours per week.
During this implementation stage it is proposed to have a skip bin placed at the transfer station front gate so that residents can place their waste in this bin until such time as the community adjust to the new opening hours. We understand that this will not work for everyone.
We will continue to honour current arrangements and should businesses or specific one-off disposals be required it is requested that arrangements be made with the Shire Office on (08) 9928 1102 or enquiries@mingenew.wa.gov.au.
The Transfer Station will now be open two days a week. New Opening Hours:
– Wednesday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
– Saturday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
