Mosquito Control 2020 (test post)

In response to recent increases in mosquito activity, there Shire is engaged in a mosquito control program.

This includes:

  1. Treatment of standing water with a larvicide to kill mosquito larvae (‘wrigglers’)
  2. Fogging to control the adult population. To minimise impact on residents this will take place at dusk (when they are most active) from the week starting 23 March 2020. Fogging will only be intermittent and dependent upon wind and weather conditions

By utilising these methods in tandem – controlling adults and larvae – it is possible to break the mosquito breeding cycle and significantly reduce their population.

How Can I Help?

Are mosquitoes a problem at your place? They rarely travel far, so it is likely they are living and breeding on or near your property. We suggest you:

  1. Empty out standing water that they could breed in
  2. Tidy up any debris which might be serving as a breeding ground
  3. Let us know! We can help treat standing water on or near your property which might be serving as a breeding ground that can’t be emptied out

You can contact the Shire on 9928 1102 or email enquiries@mingenew.wa.gov.au to report mosquito problem areas.

What Products Do You Use?

We use a Pyrethrin-based fogging agent and the granules a formulation of bacteria specifically targeted to control mosquito larvae. We are aware of community concerns following previous fogging efforts and have made great effort to ensure that the products we use are as safe as possible for residents and pets, whilst also being effective against mosquitoes.

None of our products are considered hazardous by Work Safe Australia. That said, it is not advisable to inhale the vapour when fogging is taking place.

Eat & Drink Description

Eat & Drink

Hey, you’re in the country so there’s plenty of fresh produce to be had. In town there are a selection of outlets to choose from. The bakery is always a hit and is owned and operated by two of the best bakers this side of the Indian Ocean. The Mingenew Sporting Club serves up meals most nights of the week, along with great views. If you’re staying at the Caravan park, owner Carol and her team do great food or if you’re looking to fill up the fridge or prepare a picnic, Mingenew IGA has absolutely everything you’ll need. There’s some handy info below and remember, if you’re using Mingenew as your base and feel like spoiling yourself at a fancy restaurant, we’re only half an hour from Dongara and an hour from the City of Geraldton.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Our IGA is open and you can currently grab a meal from the bakery or take-away food from the pub. As restrictions continue to lift, the Pub and Sports Club will reopen for sit-down meals – but this hasn’t happened yet.

Stay

Where to stay in Mingenew

Mingenew, particularly during Wildflower Season, is a beautiful place to stay. The days are bright and blue and our night skies are big and brilliant.

Many of Mingenew’s larger events, such as the Race Day or Expo cater for large numbers on site but, without doubt, the favourite place for visitors staying in town is the Mingenew Spring Caravan Park. The park caters for all types of visitors, vehicles and campers. There are also additional places to stay just outside of town. Info and contacts are below but please feel free to contact us for more information.

COVID-19 UPDATE

As restrictions are easing, the Mingenew Pub and Mingenew Spring Caravan Park are both once again taking bookings for accommodation. You are also able to camp at Coalseam Conservation Park, Enanty Barn or Yandanooka (the latter two require a fully self-contained van).
