Campbell’s Transport – Haulage for Terra Mining

Campbell’s Transport have been granted a Commercial Goods Vehicle Licence (CGVL) by the Department of Transport (DoT) to transport iron ore from Extension Hill to the Geraldton Port on behalf of Terra Mining for a 3 month period.

  • DoT has granted a limited number of CGVLs to Terra Mining’s road haulage contractor, Campbells Transport, for a short period of time to facilitate the achievement of their first iron ore shipment through Geraldton Port, anticipated to be in February 2024.

  • The CGVLs are valid only from 1 January 2024 to 31 March 2024. During this time, DoT will continue to engage with all key stakeholders, including the Mid-West Ports Authority, to facilitate a more suitable longer term transport solution.

  • DoT and Main Roads WA have consulted local shires who are accepting of this short-term solution for transporting iron ore to Geraldton Port.

  • The CGVLs have been issued with specific conditions that must be adhered to, including that the vehicles do not operate on school days between 7.30am and 9am and 2.30pm and 4pm.

  • Campbell’s Transport have estimated that the frequency of truck movements will average around 250 per week. The trucks will be operating 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

  • The intention of a CGVL is to regulate the transport of iron ore on roads and to encourage the use of rail transport. The Western Australian government prefers to move commercial freight by rail, wherever possible, as it has fewer negative impacts on road users and residents and minimises greenhouse gas emissions.

At a Special Meeting in December 2023, Council resolved to grant a 12 month approval to Terra Mining for the transportation of iron ore under RAV7.3 conditions, through the Shire of Mingenew, along Eleanor Street and Boolinda Road (the remainder of the haulage route is managed by Main Roads WA). As part of the approval, the Shire has established a Road User Agreement to reduce impacts on our roads, recover any costs for maintenance/repairs associated with the increased activity, establish a community infrastructure funding contribution and restrict the speed of travel along Midlands Road through town to 30km/hr. Further information can be found in the Minutes by clicking here.

The Shire is working with all stakeholders to support and advocate that the transition to rail haulage is facilitated as soon as possible.
